Breaking Vendor Lock-In for a European Bank

How a major high-street bank transitioned PDU vendors without losing control or visibility

When a leading European bank decided to change its intelligent PDU supplier, the challenge extended far beyond hardware replacement. Furthermore, the bank operated multiple data centre sites and relied on consistent power monitoring and strict rack-level security. Any disruption or fragmentation in management tools was not an option.

Undoubtedly the priority was clear: move to a new PDU vendor while maintaining a single, unified control platform.

    The Challenge: Change Without Complexity

The bank needed to replace its existing intelligent PDUs after a vendor partnership ended. However, removing all legacy hardware at once was neither practical nor desirable.

Furthermore, running two separate management systems in parallel would increase operational risk, slow response times, and add unnecessary complexity. At the same time, the bank required fully managed rack access control across all sites, with clear governance, auditing, and accountability.

The solution had to support both legacy and new PDUs simultaneously, while keeping power monitoring, environmental data, and security workflows under one roof.

A Unified Platform for a Phased Transition

Advanced Datacentre Systems (ADS) delivered a vendor-neutral solution using the Sensorium™ DCIM platform.

Sensorium™ integrated immediately with the bank’s existing intelligent PDUs, providing a single view of power data across all facilities. At the same time, it supported the new PDU hardware, allowing the bank to transition vendors gradually rather than all at once.

Thus a rack-by-rack approach gave the bank complete control. Individual cabinets could be updated without disrupting operations elsewhere, while dashboards continued to present a consistent, real-time view of power, temperature, and humidity across every site.

Automated thresholds and alerts ensured teams were notified the moment conditions moved outside defined limits.

Simplifying Security and Rack Access Control

Beyond power monitoring, ADS addressed the complexity of rack-level access management.

A centralised help-desk interface allowed security teams to manage access requests directly within the platform. As a result, ADS also introduced a custom incident reporting workflow that automatically notified relevant teams via SMS and email.

Every access event was logged, tracked, and audited through to resolution. This closed-loop process ensured visiting engineers received access only when required, and that permissions were revoked immediately once work was complete.

The Outcome: Control, Continuity, and Confidence

With Sensorium™ in place, the bank completed its vendor transition without sacrificing visibility or control. All data centres now operate through a single management interface, eliminating the need for parallel systems.

Security teams benefit from role-based access, clearer workflows, and full audit trails. Additionally, operational teams gain real-time insight across power, environment, and infrastructure, all from one platform.

Most importantly, the bank now has a scalable, vendor-independent architecture that supports future growth and change — without repeating the challenges of vendor lock-in.
